On 12 June 2024, the FPS Economy hosted a significant event titled "A European Policy for Crafts" in Brussels. This gathering brought together experts, policymakers, and enthusiasts to explore and discuss the critical themes surrounding the craft sector across Europe.
The event commenced with an introduction by Séverine Waterbley, President of the FPS Economy. This was followed by a keynote speech from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Self-Employed and SMEs, David Clarinval. The morning's agenda featured insightful presentations on good practices in Belgium, delivered by Pierre-Olivier Jacques from the FPS Economy and Elisabeth Van Houtte from CityD Wes.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of a study on a European policy for crafts, conducted within the framework of the Belgian Presidency. Elisabeth Van Houtte and Pascal Steeland of CityD Wes shared the results, providing valuable insights into the current state and future potential of the crafts sector in Europe.
Prof. De Munck Bert from the University of Antwerp offered a historical perspective on the importance of crafts, setting the stage for a robust panel discussion moderated by Suyin Aerts. The panel featured esteemed experts including De Munck Bert, Catherine Elie from Institut Supérieur des Métiers Paris, and others. This discussion delved into the pressing issues and future directions for the craft industry.
The event concluded with closing remarks, providing attendees an opportunity to network and discuss the day's insights further. Simultaneous translation into French, Dutch, and English ensured accessibility for all participants.
The event was a resounding success, highlighting the significance of developing and supporting craft policies at both national and European levels. For those who could not attend in person, streaming sessions were made available, ensuring broad access to the valuable discussions and presentations.
